Union Avenue Kroger - Building The Community
Union Avenue Kroger continues to develop, bringing vision to fruition.
EPA Energy Star
Design and construction of this new Kroger store involved not only the existing store but 7 other retail buildings housing dozens of tenants. All had to remain open during the project, necessitating 5 primary and many secondary phases of demolition. Ultimately, all existing businesses remained fully operational while 3 buildings totaling 94,000 square feet were demolished, 350,000 square feet of site modifications were performed, and the new 86,000 square-foot store was built. Because reliable drawings of structures and underground utilities were not available, extensive survey and exploratory demolition were required to establish existing conditions. Phased demolition of individual structures required temporary shoring. Partially demolished structures required permanent structural improvements.
Close coordination with Memphis Light, Gas and Water, and the Memphis Fire Department, was required to provide uninterrupted service and to ensure adequate pressure to fire hydrants was maintained during the relocation of gas, fire protection, domestic water and sewer service for Kroger and the surrounding buildings. Parking, parking lights, and traffic controls for all tenants were redesigned for each phase.
