Union Avenue Kroger - Building The Community
Union Avenue Kroger continues to develop, bringing vision to fruition.
This project included full replacement of approximately 330,000 square yards of aging pavement surrounding terminal concourses A, B, and C at the airport. Phasing of the project minimized impact to airlines and airfield operations during construction. Each utility and drainage system was designed to work temporarily during each phase until the entire system could be constructed as a whole. Grading and draining the site had to be designed to meet current NFPA and FAA criteria while maintaining ADA access to the existing building. The project required design and coordination of substantially all new underground utility systems, including hydrant fuel, water, sewer, electrical, and drainage. The project required design of a completely new trench drain system with the primary purpose of draining the site but also serving as a collection system for emergency fuel spills and occasional de-icing operations.
This project involved the reconstruction of 8,950 feet of runway 9-27 and associated taxiway connections adjacent to the FedEx super hub. Despite a schedule that was compressed to just 5 months, Pickering was able to coordinate closely with FedEx to minimize impacts to operations during the peak holiday season. Careful design of detention ponds helped to alleviate hydraulic issues with the downstream pipe network while also meeting FAA criteria for drain down time in order to reduce the risk of attracting migratory birds.
