The West Rankin Regional Wastewater System provides wastewater transport service to municipalities and other entities in western Rankin County and consists of approximately 30 miles of large-diameter wastewater interceptor pipe, a 45 million gallon-per-day pump station, and related appurtenances. Constructed in the early 1980’s, much of the existing concrete pipe was deteriorating and in need of rehabilitation. Recognizing this fact, the West Rankin Utility Authority has expended over $60 million dollars over the past 10 years on projects to restore the system.

The size and depth of the existing interceptor, as well as significant volume of wastewater handled by the system, made this rehabilitation project challenging. These constraints required the extensive use of trenchless construction methods, such as slip-lining and cured-in-place pipe in lieu of traditional open-cut construction methods. The rehabilitation effort has reduced the amount of infiltration and inflow (I/I) into the system, resulting in significant savings in treatment costs and a reduction in the amount of flow into the Pearl River.
