Drainage & Recreational Improvements to Coffee Creek | Gulfport, MS

Performed under a Master Service Agreement, Pickering assisted the City of Gulfport, MS, with engineering design of drainage and recreational improvements to Coffee Creek.  Services provided included performing a Hydrological and Hydraulic Study, performing an Environmental Assessment, Engineering Design for proposed improvements, assisting with project bid, and Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI).  General project management also included coordination with vendors and five subconsultants (survey, geotechnical, site lighting, structural, and landscape architecture).

Aside from general maintenance of the existing channel, non-structural improvements were developed and designed to increase the capacity of Coffee Creek.  In addition to the hydraulic improvements, Pickering also assisted with design of improvements to the existing dilapidated Clower-Thornton Nature Area.  These improvements consisted of creating a 12’ wide trail along the west bank of Coffee Creek connecting the existing Clower-Thornton parking area with the Katie Patterson Booth Community Center.  Further, two new pedestrian crossings are proposed, as well as rehabilitation of an existing one; these bridges will connect the proposed trail to the existing trail network on the east side of the creek.  Finally, a proposed underpass below the existing CSX railroad bridge will connect the Clower-Thornton Nature Area to the proposed Centennial Plaza Development and its access to the Sand Beach.
